'Once in a blue moon' is a phrase used to describe something that does not occur very often, or something that is extremely rare. When referring to the moon itself, there are many definitions of blue moon. The most common type of blue moon refers to the second full moon occurring in one calendar month. This happens about once every two and a half years. Blue moon can also mean the third full moon in a season with four. If any season (spring, winter, summer, fall, or winter) has four full moons, the third full moon is called the blue moon. The most rare type of blue moon occurs when the moon actually does turn blue. The reason for this lies in volcanic dust particles in the atmosphere. The dust particles affect the light spectrum and cause the moon to appear blue. Blue moon clover only grows during this type of blue moon. There are several other definitions for blue moon, but these are the most common. Some farmers coordinate crop planting, fertilizing, and harvesting with the cycles of blue moons.
