Scarecrows

Gardeners and farmers use scarecrows to frighten birds and animals away from plants and crops. Scarecrows are not usually very frightening in appearance, but the movement of their clothes in the breeze may scare away some animals and birds. However, over the years, scarecrows have not been very effective and are now used mainly for decoration in many parts of the country. It is more advisable to tie tin pie plates from trees or posts. The noise and movement of the pie plates in the wind have a much greater ability to frighten away birds than billowing scarecrow clothes. Many animals have gotten used to people, and are smart enough that human figures do not scare them. Scarecrow is also a term used to describe anything that is frightening or scary, but not actually dangerous.
