Ladybugs are insects that many people admire because of their brightly colored bodies. Although the red and black colors attract humans, they are a warning sign to predators that they should not eat the ladybugs! Ladybugs are able to emit a bad smell and taste when they are being threatened; if a bird tries to eat one, it will not taste very good. The bright red colors of the insect act as a reminder and help keep the ladybug safe.
Farmers are especially fond of ladybug beetles because they actually help keep pests out of their crops! Aphids are a plant-eating insect that can often destroy many of the plants farmers are growing. Ladybugs feed on the aphids, saving the farmers’ crops. Many people believe ladybugs are a sign of good luck. This belief probably began when farmers realized that the beetles were helping to keep bad bugs out of the garden.
